Flyer Magazine Bash
Bank Holiday Weekend, 28th & 29th August
Sunday morning, 9am, and I'm doing the 'A check' on Uniform Wiskey. I'm off to the Flyer Magazine fly-in and Summer Bash. This is going to be a short flight, because the event is being held at Enstone! I wanted to fly in though, and in order to fly in, you have to fly out! Anyhow, a little bit of local handling and I rejoined downwind for runway 26. This landing was eprfectly reasonable, unlike some of my attempts from Thursday!
After putting the plane away, I was assigned car wrangling duties. From the peri track there was a pretty good view of the aircraft flying in. As well as the normal Cessna and Piper singles, there were some twin Aztecs and a good selection of more interesting types -- Cubs, Austers, Luscombes, a Puss Moth, Miles Messenger, and so on. These were marshalled by other volunteers onto a mown parking area next to the South side grass runway.
The afternoon was spent socialising, taking pictures, devouring barbecued sausages, putting faces to names and so on The weather was simply glorious; sunshine, temperatures in the mid 20s and only occasional patches of cloud. The 'bash' itself was held on the lawn around the clubhouse. In the background there were stalls selling drinks, cakes and barbecued food, AFE was there selling pilot supplies, AeroShell was selling, er, oil, various planes were on show, including the Gippsland Airvan, Ultimate High brought an Extra in from Kemble, and CSE Aviation were demonstrating their diesel Cessna182 and Warrior (they were also trying to flog off a brand new 172 for £120K!)
In the evening there was dinner and entertainment (from Steve Morely's band, The Retros) over at Heytrop House, although I had other things on so wasn't able to attend.
Monday dawned bright and sunny. I arrived at the airfield around 10:30, to be greeted by a few hung over faces and lots of coffee drinking. Today's duty was marshalling any more arriving aircraft. Mostly the planes were leaving; during my stint only ony plane arrived, and he was non-radio.More barbecue, more chatting, more diesel demos, more drinking (for those not flying), more sunburn. Until finally the day was done, and everyone went home having thoroughly enjoyed themselves and looking forward to next year.
