A little Jodel-ing
Thursday 29th June 2006
I had a nice little bimble in John Newbold's Jodel DR1050 this afternoon (G-AYEJ, a 200HP tail dragger, cruising at about 110 MPH). Sadly I wasn't able to log it, but I did fly from the left seat and managed the take off and landing myself -- first time in a tail dragger! Okay, I did have a little help with the rudder, as I was tending to over control during the take off and landing rolls!
We flew to a point a few miles North of Banbury and then tried a few turns of varying steepness, after which came the fun part: A GPS-based ILS approach back into Enstone! John had configured his GPS Pilot III in OBS mode, to provide localiser and glide slope displays onto runway 26. Interestingly the display also had a bug on it indicating the optimal bearing to intercept. I flew the 'ILS' while John maintained lookout, down to 500ft, which is as far as the GPS will take you (the beams switch off at that point), and then made a visual landing on South Side Grass.
